John the Baptist pointed the crowds beyond himself to the One who was coming—One far greater. While John baptized with water, the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
In Luke 3:16–17, we see both the promise and the warning of Christ’s coming. Jesus brings the purifying work of the Spirit, but He also comes as the righteous Judge who separates what is true from what is false. The imagery of the threshing floor reminds us that the gospel both saves and sifts.
